Author Feature: S.M. Boyce & the "Lichgates" Hidden World Tour

The L.O.V.E. blog is so honored to be a stop on the Hidden World Blog Tour for author S.M. Boyce and her novel "Lichgates: The Grimoire Trilogy". To hear a special message from the author herself, check out the video clip!

We asked this lovely author a few questions so let's see what she had to say:

What led you to choose to write in the Fantasy genre?
I love to play with the impossible and make it real, and that’s what the fantasy and paranormal genres are all about: magic, fantastical creatures, and amazing stories. I don’t stick to just one genre, though. One minute I’ll be writing about magic, and the next I’ll start a story about ghosts. As long as something truly amazing happens, I’m happy.

Is there a particular author that inspires your writing?
Well, I often talk about how Neil Gaiman and Tolkien both inspire me, but here’s a gooey secret for you: my husband is one of the greatest influences in my life. He’s so supportive that I don’t know what I would do without him. On top of that, he’s a fantasy nut, too! So we frequently discuss plot points from the series so that I can hash out the details. In fact, he knows how the entire series will end already, and knew the plot to book one before he even read it!

How do your friends and family feel about your writing career?
Just like my husband Geoff, my family is so supportive. Most of my family members were among the first to read Lichgates, and their feedback was invaluable. They love to see me happy, and they’re just amazing for it. Most of my friends are writers, so they’re my cheerleaders, too, just like I am for them!

What do you do to prepare for writing a new book?
I need to plot the entire novel before I can really start writing more than a scene here or there. So, even before a quarter of any novel is written, I have a full chapter-by-chapter outline. This is from the chick who loves highlighters and color-codes her planner, though, so are you really surprised?

Do you prefer e-books or paperbacks?
Both, actually! I know this is the great debate right now, but you really can have the best of both worlds. I actually have a guest post on this later on in the tour, where I’ll talk about it in more detail. Basically, I like to read almost all books as eBooks first. They’re cheap, I can take my eReader anywhere, and it’s not hard on my eyes to read them. But if I love a book, I order the print edition to display. It’s my little system and I love it.

What do you want readers to remember most about your work?
Great question! I suppose if I want readers to remember any one thing, it would be that my stories were enjoyable and fun. I add layers of depth to my novels, but my primary goal is always to tell a story that sticks with you forever and pops up during the small moments in life: when you see someone that reminds you of a character, or when you say something one of my characters would say. To have that flare of recollection says to me that the novel stuck with the reader and made a difference in his or her life, however small it may be. That’s all I can ask for.

What are you currently working on?
It’s really exciting, actually! I’m making great progress on Treason, which is book two to the Grimoire Trilogy. I’m also developing the plots and outlines for the series’ novellas, as well as adding to my short story collection and encyclopedia articles, which are available for free over at the Grimoire Online. It’s a busy time, but I want to get everything related to the Grimoire out in the next year or two.
